The 101 number one song of the day wasn’t actually one song – it was more like two halves of two different songs and there was an internal struggle to bring those both halves together. The first part was an introduction piece to a musical and the group that took it to the top saw it performed on stage and immediately wanted to record it. Their producer, Bones Howe, was not impressed saying, “it’s only a half a song.” They said, “You gotta see it on stage.” So he did and it was then he realized that something later on in the show entitled “The Flesh Failures” would be a perfect complement. The group wasn’t convinced but Bones persisted and together they pieced the two parts together for a song that reached number one on April 12, 1969 and became the second biggest single of the year. Here’s your 101 number one song of the day for the “Fifth Dimension” (Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In)
