Scott McCarthy was born in Michigan and lived there until he was ten. That was followed by a series of moves which included stops in Kentucky and California before he ended up in Phoenix as a young teenager. By that time he already caught the radio bug after having heard some nationally known stations in Detroit Chicago and Los Angeles. He says he considers himself fortunate to be able to make his living doing what he had dreamed of doing when he grew up. Of course, whether he ever actually did grow up remains open to debate.
After attending college at Arizona State University he landed his first job in the booming metropolis of Ponca City, Oklahoma (10,000 people, three radio stations). That was followed by stops in San Angelo and McAllen, Texas before achieving another boyhood dream of working in Phoenix on the radio. In 1996 Scott was contacted by a former boss who was by then running KHEY in El Paso. That led to Scott moving to this area. After twelve years of working afternoons on El Paso’s leading (and eventually El Paso’s only) country station he jumped at the chance to come to Las Cruces and work for Magic 105 and eventually 101 Gold. He’s currently enjoying his afternoon slot on 101 Gold after a
couple years of doing evenings.
Scott enjoys spending time with his friends, listening to the radio (what a shocker, right?), and reading to keep up with current events. He loves working on the radio but also enjoys his down time. He visits family and friends in Phoenix a couple times a year and considers it his home town. He says he’s basically happy with the way his life has turned out but wouldn’t turn down a few million dollars in lottery winnings. Of course, one must play the lottery in order to win it so he’s not holding his breath.
