Tip A Cop for Special Olympics
Tip-A-Cop Fundraiser this Thursday at Texas Roadhouse! Las Cruces Police officers will participate in a Tip-A-Cop fundraiser Thursday to benefit New Mexico Special Olympics. The Tip-A-Cop fundraiser will be held from 4-9 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant, 2200 E. Lohman Ave. in Las Cruces. LCPD officers will help seat customers and act as servers to generate tips that are donated to New Mexico Special Olympics. Officers also will be selling Law Enforcement Torch Run T-shirts and wrist bands during the Tip-A-Cop fundraiser. Donations from the Tip-A-Cop evening help families of Special Olympians with travel and lodging expenses during the New Mexico Special Olympics games held annually in Albuquerque. This Saturday March 8th, come out to Branigan Cultural Center at 510 N. Main St. from 9A-1P and visit with dozens of agencies that need your help – over 35 non-profit groups will be there from the Aggie Athletic Club to Big Brothers Big Sisters and Habitat for Humanity. Bataan Memorial Death March
Registration for the 25th Bataan Memorial Death March to be held on March 23, 2014 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico closes March 9. Training recommendations can be found at www.bataanmarch.com. The Bataan Memorial Death March is a challenging trek through the high desert terrain conducted in honor of the heroic service members who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II, sacrificing their freedom, health and, in many cases, their lives. Participants may choose either the 26.2 mile route or the 14.2 mile route.
Hatch Health Fair
Saturday, March 8th from 9-12 DACC will be in Hatch at The Hatch Center at 210 East Hill Street. There will be Health Screenings, help with health insurance, activities for children, food and prizes. 101 Gold will be broadcasting live from 9-11!
Great American Clean Up
The 22nd annual Great American Cleanup is planned for April 12 and organizers are hoping to have more than 1,000 volunteers sign up for this year’s event. The city-wide cleanup, sponsored locally by Keep Las Cruces Beautiful, is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 12. Last year, roughly 1,000 volunteers participated and organizers hope to equal or surpass that number in 2014. Individuals, groups and organizations can sign up for the Great American Cleanup through the Codes Enforcement link on the Las Cruces Police Department’s website or by telephone. Keep Las Cruces Beautiful encourages early enrollment. The sign-up form can be found on the Keep Las Cruces Beautiful link, on the bottom-right of the www.CLCPD.com website. Or, volunteers may call James Woods at (575) 528-4723. Volunteers can suggest an area of town they wish to work or KLCB can designate a location in need of cleaning. Following the Great American Cleanup, volunteers will be treated to a free lunch hosted by the Walmart stores of Las Cruces. APA seeking donations for their 2nd Annual Rummage Sale Extravaganza
ACTion Programs for Animals (APA) is seeking donations for their 2nd Annual “Name Your Own Price” Rummage Sale Extravaganza on Saturday, March 29th, at the VFW Post 3242, 2001 N. Mesquite, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The group is accepting all donations except clothing. Donations can be dropped off at a storage location by appointment or picked up by volunteers. Donors can also bring their donations on March 28th, the Friday before the event, to the VFW location anytime between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit APA’s Dona Ana Pets Alive! (DAPA!) campaign, which rescues dogs and cats from the municipal shelter as well as former abuse-case animals. The event will also feature a pet adoption as well as enchilada plates and drinks, popcorn and baked goods. People will be able to name their own price for items they wish to purchase and a suggested donation amount for animals they wish to adopt. The only exceptions to the “name your pricde” deal will be large rummage sale items, such as furniture, which will be priced, and puppies/kittens under 6 months of age, which the organization will seek their normal adoption fee of $50 for kittens and $75 for puppies.
Student film contest:
The white sands international film festival (WSIFF) is announcing a student film contest. To enter you are asked to write and produce a 30 or 60 sec promo video for the WSIFF which should include the official event ..logo… event dates… location and website. The deadline for the promo is 5pm March 15th. The festival this year is the 10th and brings films in from across the state and around the world. The festival is a 5 day event running from Sept 3-7 with screenings…workshops and VIP parties in Las Cruces. For more info call 522-1232.
SCORE and WESST are doing a business startup training series and its free to anyone interested. Classes start Feb 12 from 5:30-7:30PM. There will be two classes per month thru April. For more info and to registar for the classes call 541-1583 or 523-5627.
Be a Lifeguard:
The City of L C park and rec. dept is offering two lifeguar courses for this year. If you are 15 or over you can apply for this great summer job.
