KC Counts

KC just celebrated her 20th year in radio! She began her career as a fetus while attending Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. Her paternal grandmother’s family homesteaded there in 1912, the year New Mexico became a state! Two of “Mema’s” sisters and many other relatives still live there. KC’s Las Cruces roots run deep too as her maternal Great-Grandfather, Dr. Jerome Love was one of the Organ Mountain ranch owners. He traveled a large region in his mobile surgical unit (supposedly the first of its kind) and even made his way to Portales where “Mema” was – she was even acquainted with him long before the two families would merge in 1970 when KC’s mother and father married in El Paso just before he went to Germany during the Vietnam War. KC graduated from Burges High School (almost with honors) where she enjoyed a year on the flag corps, a year as a cheerleader and three years in theater and speech and debate (which is probably why she’s so darn argumentative). KC met up with Mike McKay in 1998; their first show together was on April Fool’s Day that year. They worked together until 2004 when Mike began at 101 Gold and KC began reporting news on KVIA. The opportunity to form Bravo Mic Communications and purchase 101 Gold brought KC into the Las Cruces radio market and enabled Your Morning Show to get back on the air! Hear KC with Mike weekdays 6-10 right here on Southern New Mexico’s #1 radio station. She would love to catch up with you on Facebook (can hardly keep her away from it according to her poor husband of 18 years). Clint works as a Lieutenant in the El Paso Fire Department and hopes to continue his flight training to one day fly commercially. We don’t talk about that too much because it makes KC a little nervous (you remember Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valenz, The Big Bopper, Jim Croce, Otis Redding, John Denver…you get the idea). Questions for KC? Feel free to email

When the 101 number one song of the day got to the top, the group became the first artists of the rock era to have their first three chart releases reach number one.  (And it’s next)  The song listed its writing and production credits as “The Corporation” rather than give the actual people individual credit.  That was most likely due to the bitterness involved in the recent split with superstar writers and producers Holland Dozier Holland… (more…)

Before today’s 101 number one song of the day there was rock music and there was folk music but after its release a whole new genre was created that influenced and spawned a generation of musicians and supergroups (more on that next) which included Crosby, Stills and Nash; the Eagles, the Flying Burrito Brothers and more.  The impetus for the change was electrifying a Bob Dylan song with a 12 string Rickenback guitar…

Jim McGuinn was inspired to get his first electric 12 string after he saw George Harrison play one in A Hard Day’s Night.  McGuinn formed a group with friends Gene Clark, David Crosby and others.  Oddly enough, the only member of the group you’re about to hear that actually recorded today’s featured song was McGuinn because of a lack of studio time.  Producer Terry Melcher – son of actress Doris Day – hired the best studio musicians of the day which included Glen Campbell and Leon Russell in order to hasten the process.  The result was the first folk rock song and a number one song for a new group which reached the top on June 26, 1965 for the Byrds “Mr Tambourine Man.”

Need some pointers on controlling your snoring?

If you can’t stop snoring . . . or the person who sleeps NEXT to you can’t stop snoring . . . check this out.  A recent study in Brazil found that doing a few simple TONGUE exercises each day can help.

They had people do them three times a day, and after three months, they were snoring 36% less.  And how LOUD they snored dropped 59%.  Here are five of the exercises . . . you’re supposed to do them 20 times each.

1.  With your mouth open, push your tongue against the roof of your mouth, and slide it backwards 20 times.

2.  Keep the tip of your tongue against your bottom teeth, and try to push the BACK of your tongue down.

3.  Suck your tongue against the roof of your mouth.  It sounds weird, but try it . . . just push your tongue up, creating suction, and use your entire tongue to push against the roof of your mouth.  Then repeat it 19 more times.

4.  Lift your soft palate 20 times.  It’s on the roof of your mouth at the very back.  If you feel around with your tongue, it’s where the top of your mouth starts feeling soft.  And it tends to lift up when you yawn, smile, sing, or say “AH” like you’re at the doctor.

5.  If you’re not into the tongue thing, you can also press your cheek away from your teeth 10 times on each side.

Today’s 101 Number one Song of the Day demoted a former band member of the artist’s from the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It would be the only time any two members of that band would hold the #1 and #2 positions on the chart. The song and the album it was on were delayed because the artists was supposed to be produced by Phil Spector… (more…)

The 101 number one song of the day came along at just the right time for the artist who was facing lawsuits from former band members, he was going through a divorce and he almost went to jail for failure to pay child support. Still, he was reluctant to record the song because of its genre…he was on the Motown label and they wanted him to record a …DISCO song! Hear the rest of the story and the song at 6:40 on 101 Gold. He thought disco had no substance, but after his label mate, Diana Ross had a number one hit with a disco tune (Love Hangover) he finally caved and the song would become a big influence on Michael Jackson who used some of the lines from the song…

”let’s dance, let’s shout, get funky what it’s all about”…number one on this day in 1977 (Got To Give It Up – Marvin Gaye) …Blurred Lines clip Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke had to pay over 7 M to Gay’s children

The 101 number one song of the day was written by the most successful female songwriter of all time.  She wrote songs for others because she once said, “She didn’t want to become a star.” (But that would all change with the release of today’s featured single which you’ll hear at 6:40.) She had great success writing for such artists as Bobby Vee (Take Good Care of My Baby) the Drifters (Up on the Roof) Aretha Franklin (A Natural Woman) and “I’m into something Good” by Herman’s Hermits.  This list goes on and on… (more…)

101 number one song of the day was the only number one single to have two different versions of the same song, by the same artists to be on Billboard’s Hot 100 at the same time.  (You’ll find out what it is in minutes.)  It was recorded by a duo who both worked for a time for the Beach Boys – she as a backup singer and piano player and he played all the other keyboards during their tour.  When the tour ended, they began working together.  They recorded their first album entirely in Spanish.  Later they released an English version of one of the songs (written by Neil Sedaka)…

which became number one in America on June 22nd, 1975.  When the Spanish version was released as a single shortly thereafter it became the only occasion when two versions of a number one single were on the same chart at the same time and the artists that did it – The Captain and Toni Tenille were the ones to do it with “Love Will Keep Us Together.” “Por Amor Viviremos”

Today’s 101 #1 Song of the Day has a warble…and the band’s label didn’t like that – they thought it would keep the single from being successful so it wasn’t released first from the new album, as the band had hoped it would be. It was probably that warble that made it really stand out. Hear the rest of the story and the song next on 101 Gold. The song ended up being one of two that would prevent Bruce Springsteen from reaching number one with…

“Dancing in the Dark” – the other was Prince’s “When Doves Cry”. Today’s featured single would be one of only two chart toppers for the group although they would have 11 tracks reach the top 20 in the U.S. The year was 1984. The group is Duran Duran and “The Reflex” is today’s 101 #1 song of the day
