KC Counts

KC just celebrated her 20th year in radio! She began her career as a fetus while attending Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. Her paternal grandmother’s family homesteaded there in 1912, the year New Mexico became a state! Two of “Mema’s” sisters and many other relatives still live there. KC’s Las Cruces roots run deep too as her maternal Great-Grandfather, Dr. Jerome Love was one of the Organ Mountain ranch owners. He traveled a large region in his mobile surgical unit (supposedly the first of its kind) and even made his way to Portales where “Mema” was – she was even acquainted with him long before the two families would merge in 1970 when KC’s mother and father married in El Paso just before he went to Germany during the Vietnam War. KC graduated from Burges High School (almost with honors) where she enjoyed a year on the flag corps, a year as a cheerleader and three years in theater and speech and debate (which is probably why she’s so darn argumentative). KC met up with Mike McKay in 1998; their first show together was on April Fool’s Day that year. They worked together until 2004 when Mike began at 101 Gold and KC began reporting news on KVIA. The opportunity to form Bravo Mic Communications and purchase 101 Gold brought KC into the Las Cruces radio market and enabled Your Morning Show to get back on the air! Hear KC with Mike weekdays 6-10 right here on Southern New Mexico’s #1 radio station. She would love to catch up with you on Facebook (can hardly keep her away from it according to her poor husband of 18 years). Clint works as a Lieutenant in the El Paso Fire Department and hopes to continue his flight training to one day fly commercially. We don’t talk about that too much because it makes KC a little nervous (you remember Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valenz, The Big Bopper, Jim Croce, Otis Redding, John Denver…you get the idea). China funerals

According to the Wall Street Journal,

In China, friends and family of the deceased may have to do without a special form of funereal entertainment: strippers.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Culture on Thursday, the government plans to work closely with the police to eliminate such performances, which are held with the goal of drawing more mourners.

Pictures of a funeral in the city of Handan in northern Hebei province last month showed a dancer removing her bra as assembled parents and children watched. They were widely circulated online, prompting much opprobrium. In its Thursday statement, the Ministry of Culture cited “obscene” performances in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu, as well as in Handan, and pledged to crack down on such lascivious last rites.

Today’s 101 #1 Song of the Day was originally title “Once I Had Love” – the writers referred to it as “the disco song” – and they tried recording it between 1975 and 1978 as a ballad, as reggae, giving it a more pop feel – but nothing worked so they shelved it and later, when they met with a producer to start work on an album, they played all their other songs for the producer and at the end he askes “have you got anything else?” (more…)

101 number one song of the day had the longest title ever to reach the top but the singer’s memory of the recording session was very short (more on that next) at the time he was spending upwards of $3000 a week to feed a drug habit that included valium, cocaine and amphetamines and looking back at that period he wonders that he was still alive.  Shortly after the song reached number one, he had an epiphany, cleaned himself up and spent the next several years singing gospel music for which he earned five grammies… (more…)

101 Number One Song of the Day doesn’t sound like Elvis but the King’s influence was responsible for his choice of stage names although it wouldn’t be obvious to the casual fan.  (The story, and the song is next)  Glyn Ellis was born in Manchester, England and by 1965, even people from Manchester were considered to have that Liverpool sound.  But it was more of a Memphis sound that inspired Glyn when he started playing the pubs and clubs around his hometown.  So when he came to change his name he took one from one of Elvis’s backup musicians… (more…)

Today’s 101 #1 Song of the day was written, recorded and released by members of the group Arrows in 1975…the writer said it was a knee-jerk reaction to the Rolling Stones’ “It’s Only Rock and Roll (but I like it)” but it wouldn’t become a hit until 7 years later when another artist picked it up…hear the rest of the story and the song – next on 101 Gold… (more…)
