Crusin In Cruces

KC Counts

KC just celebrated her 20th year in radio! She began her career as a fetus while attending Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. Her paternal grandmother’s family homesteaded there in 1912, the year New Mexico became a state! Two of “Mema’s” sisters and many other relatives still live there. KC’s Las Cruces roots run deep too as her maternal Great-Grandfather, Dr. Jerome Love was one of the Organ Mountain ranch owners. He traveled a large region in his mobile surgical unit (supposedly the first of its kind) and even made his way to Portales where “Mema” was – she was even acquainted with him long before the two families would merge in 1970 when KC’s mother and father married in El Paso just before he went to Germany during the Vietnam War. KC graduated from Burges High School (almost with honors) where she enjoyed a year on the flag corps, a year as a cheerleader and three years in theater and speech and debate (which is probably why she’s so darn argumentative). KC met up with Mike McKay in 1998; their first show together was on April Fool’s Day that year. They worked together until 2004 when Mike began at 101 Gold and KC began reporting news on KVIA. The opportunity to form Bravo Mic Communications and purchase 101 Gold brought KC into the Las Cruces radio market and enabled Your Morning Show to get back on the air! Hear KC with Mike weekdays 6-10 right here on Southern New Mexico’s #1 radio station. She would love to catch up with you on Facebook (can hardly keep her away from it according to her poor husband of 18 years). Clint works as a Lieutenant in the El Paso Fire Department and hopes to continue his flight training to one day fly commercially. We don’t talk about that too much because it makes KC a little nervous (you remember Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valenz, The Big Bopper, Jim Croce, Otis Redding, John Denver…you get the idea). Today’s 101 #1 Song of the Day was written by a member of the singer’s back up band on the last day of 1973 – which happened to be the singer’s 30th birthday. The story is he wrote it WHILE he was driving from his home in Aspen to L.A. John Martin Sommers said he was just feeling pretty good about things in his life at the time…hear the rest of the story next on 101 Gold. it was included on an album in 1974 but it wasn’t until it was released as a live version the following year that it shot to number one… (more…)

The 101 Number One Song of the Day was an Oscar winning song with a title that doesn’t appear anywhere in the lyrics so they gave it a second title.  (That’s next) It was written and performed by a woman whose two biggest hits were title songs to movie.  In the first she had a prominent role in the movie which went on to be a TV show although she did not play that part when it went to the small screen.  But the movie role made her an international star… (more…)

The 101 number one song of the day was the first release from the artist’s self titled album and it was controversial – but no one was really sure what it was about – so the question remained just who should be offended.  (more on that next)  It was recorded in December 1969 at the famous studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama by a band once reviled as too scruffy and dirty for decent folk, but by the turn of the decade they became the ruling rock elite, gentlemen of leisure and members of the Jet Set.  The first record released on their own label was simultaneously interpreted as a racist, sexist slur …or was it referring to Mexican heroin?!!? … (more…)

The Charlie Charlie Challenge has been played by thousands and thousands of young people after a number of videos have allegedly shown supernatural happenings.

The game involves placing two pencils on a piece of paper in the shape of the cross with the words ‘yes’ and ‘no’. Participants then repeat the phrase “Charlie, Charlie can we play?” in order to connect with the demon.

If Charlie is present, the pencils will move to indicate his answer.

The 101 number one song of the day was sung by a guy who quit his band to be a dentist and getting him to rejoin the group was like pulling teeth.   The group had a few hits but he was sure they’d hang it up after a few months of moderate success.  His future, he was sure, was rooted in root canal.  So he left the west coast to head east and pursue that career… (more…)

We get some Mouth to Mouth with the 101 #1 Song of the Day today…that was the name of the album it came from! And the song held a record for being #1 in more countries than any other song from 1980 to 2005! It had hit number one in 28 different nations. It wasn’t until Madonna’s “Hung Up” hit #1 in 41 different countries in 2005 that the record fell. When the song was written, the one hit wonder group lived in Minneapolis but they had dreams of moving to the Big Apple, where they could “keep moving”… (more…)

Today’s 101 #1 Song of the Day comes from an artist whose name is reflected in his appearance and it was because of his appearance that he was forced to take special education classes in Beaumont, Texas, where he was born. The song got its name because it was chopped up and pieced back together …and ended up a lot different than its original incarnation and it was actually never even intended to be on the album – it was added at the last minute on a whim…hear the rest of the story and the song next on 101 Gold. The performer in question said the song, originally titled “The Double Drum Song”, had a monster-like, lumberingbeat… (more…)
