Today marks the 45th anniversary of the photo shoot that captured perhaps the most famous street crossing in history. The Beatles — John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, in that order — were snapped walking across London’s Abbey Road for the cover of final studio album that the band recorded, Abbey Road.
To commemorate the occasion, a few hundred Fab Four fans gathered at the site this morning. Also there lending a musical hand was the cast from the Beatles-themed West End show Let It Be.
Meanwhile, The Beatles’ official website marked the milestone by posting a gallery of outtakes from the August 1969 shoot, all taken by the late photographer Iain Macmillan. The images show the band members in both directions at the now famous “zebra” crossing.
