The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a hit making machine that often was slammed by the critics for not writing their own material. The critics should have recognized their incredible knack for discovering a long list of unknowns who would go on to make up whose who of pop songwriters.   They recognized the talent and recorded the work of Laura Nyro, Harry Nilsson, Leo Sayer, Elton John and Bernie Taupin before they were discovered by the public.
