The 101 number one song of the day was released as a single because of audience reaction when it was performed in clubs. It was released in the middle of February, 1974 but by the middle March it was dead on the charts. So what happened to revive the song and get it headed to the top?  Suddenly it sold 50,000 copies in New York City because it became a huge hit in dance clubs. Then radio DJs were scrambling to get a copy to play on the air – again. Once that happened it shot up to the top of the charts reaching number one during this week in 1974 for the – pretty much – one hit wonder – Hues Corporation (Rock the boat)

The name was originally called “Children of Howard Hughes” because the group’s founder, Wally Holmes, thought it would be funny for a black group to be named that. Apparently, the people surrounding the famous reclusive multi-millionaire didn’t think it was so funny so they changed their name to Hues Corporation spelled H-U-E-S
