The 101 number one song of the day got to the top with the help of searing solo guitar work by Eddie Van Halen who was so happy to be a part of the project he did it for free. He said, “I didn’t care, I did it as a favor.” The man who wrote and recorded the song was so multi-talented that none other than the master of dance Fred Astaire, who lived in the same neighborhood when the performer was just a little kid said, “He is a wonderful mover…he makes these moves up himself and it is just great to watch. I think he just feels that way when his singing those songs. The song he was singing when it ruled the charts on May 1st, 1983 was “Beat It.” It’s none other than Michael Jackson.
