The 101 Number One Song of the Day: marked a return to the roots of the kind of rock and roll for a group whose last several songs were considered “socially
relevant.” It was 1971 but the sound was pure 1965.
It was the 17th chart record produced by Norman Whitfield for the group you’re about to hear. By the late 60’s they had evolved their style from romance to revolution reflecting the turbulent times. But that formula was beginning to wear thin so they decided to change their direction once again to one that was more reminiscent of the style which brought them into prominence. And it worked, giving them their 3rd number one single which arrived on top of the charts on April 3, 1971. It was the Temptations (Just My Imagination) —Eddie Kendricks sang lead on that song but by the time it reached the top, he’d left the Temptations for a career on his own.
