The 101 number one song of the day comes from a man whose career has gone full circle from gospel singer to sex symbol and back to the gospel – this time preaching it.
He was born in Arkansas and began singing gospel music when he was nine after his family moved to Grand Rapids, MI. Later, a record company A & R man tried to get him to come to Memphis to record for his label but he said he didn’t like Memphis. Eventually, he changed his mind and later moved there where he became an ordained minister preaching the gospel at the city’s Full Tabernacle Church. But before that, he recorded a string of hits culminating with today’s 101 number one song of the day which topped the charts on February 12, 1972. At the time he was considered the 70’s sexiest soul singer. Later he returned to the recording studio and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. From gospel to R&B to gospel and back to R&B – Here’s Al Green’s biggest hit – Let’s Stay Together…
