The sign language interpreter at Tuesday’s memorial service in Johannesburg for Nelson Mandela, who purportedly was signing the words of speakers including President Obama for the deaf, was apparently a fake. According to experts and people in the deaf community, the man was apparently signing the equivalent of gibberish. Deaf American actress Marlee Matlin told CNN Wednesday, “It was almost like he was doing baseball signs. I was appalled.” Questions remain about how he was hired, with a spokesman for the ruling African National Congress saying the party had not hired him for the event, although they’d used him previously on some occasions. The South African government was reportedly investigating.
