It was written and recorded by a group known as the Gladiolas who were signed by the Excello label in Nashville. Unfortunately, their level of success was not so “Excello” so they parted company but the label kept the rights to their name so they needed a new one. The group’s bass player had recently seen an old car in a repair shop and they thought the its name sounded right for them so they borrowed it. The car was called Zodiac.
