Following the massive success of Stevie Nicks‘ 1983 hit “Stand Back” — featuring Prince on keyboards — Nicks says he offered her “Purple Rain” to record. Nicks, who scored a Top Five hit with “Stand Back,” was actually inspired by Prince’s 1983 smash “Little Red Corvette.” Coincidently, it was Prince’s dynamic keyboard work that helped “Stand Back” become an instant classic. Nicks spoke about the “Purple Rain” demo Prince offered her: “I’ve still got it — with the whole instrumental track and a little bit of Prince singing, ‘Can’t get over that feeling,’ or something. I told him, ‘Prince, I’ve listened to this a hundred times but I wouldn’t know where to start. It’s a movie, it’s epic. The olive branch of him giving me that cassette was huge, but I think he would have liked a romance with me, too.” Although no romance bloomed between the diminutive pair, Nicks remained, “flattered” by his efforts.
