The 101 number one song of the day was one of those “B” side records that disc jockeys preferred to the side that was supposed to be the hit. The “A” side was a Neil Diamond composition called the “Boat that I Row” and both sides were sung by the girl dubbed, “The Scottish Brenda Lee.”
Her name is Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie whose stage name was suggested by her manager but only after hours of rejecting many different choices. Finally out of frustration, she was about to give up with the words, “I’ll tell you one thing, she’s a real lulu of a kid.” It stuck and on October 25, 1967 she owned the number one song in America – which was the title song to a hit movie starring Sydney Poitier in which she appeared “To Sir with Love”
