Today’s 101 # 1 Song of the Day was written and recorded by a self described short, fat loud mouthed rebel who often got into fights growing up in Indiana. But what really made him mad was his name.
His first album came out in 1975 and that’s when he found out the record company had released it under a name other than his own. He protested but was told it was either that name or no album. That album went nowhere but the name stuck. At least for the next seven years when he released he released the album “American Fool” which would ultimately produce three big hits including the song which reached number one on October 2, 1982. After which he had enough clout with the label to force the issue of his original last name which was then added to the name he had been known as to his ever increasing body of fans. That name is Mellencamp – as in John Cougar Mellencamp with “Jack and Diane.”
