Most of us know that Paul McCartney lost a bidding war to Michael Jackson for the rights to Beatles music but he was successful in purchasing the publishing rights to the music of the creator of today’s 101 number one song of the day – and a lot of that music was created right here in New Mexico.

Today’s featured artist started taking piano lessons at 11 but within a year, he got hooked on the guitar.  The song you’re about to hear was produced by Norman Petty and much of the singer’s subsequent music was recorded at Petty’s studios in Clovis.  Later, Paul McCartney would buy both the studios and the music to ensure that the memory of the man who was at number one on September 24, 1957 would live on – Buddy Holly (That’ll Be The Day)
