The 101 number one song of the day was the first song in the rock era to be number one by two different artists and it was written by the hottest performer of the year 1971 but she didn’t sing it.
She was Carole King who was busy that year with her Tapestry album which spawned several hits and stayed on the charts for several years. But the song you’re about to hear was written several years earlier and taken to the top spot in 1963 by Steve Lawrence who had started singing professionally when he was eight years old. The singer of today’s 101 number one song of the day beat that feat by several years when he started performing with his older brothers at the tender age of four. By the time he was 13, he was a veteran of TV variety shows, most often appearing on the Andy Williams show. The teen magazines ran articles on the entire group but they singled him out for special attention and because of that he started recording on his own. The result was a number one song on September 16, 1971 – He is Donny Osmond and this is your 101 number one song of the day (Go Away Little Girl)
