The 101 number one song of the day was written and performed by a former soldier
who was learning how to be a telephone lineman when he met the character who
inspired today’s featured song.
They were at Fort Dix in New Jersey. The guy stayed there about a week, and one evening he turned around and said he was really fed up and tired. He went AWOL and then returned a short while later to pick up his Army paycheck. They put handcuffs on him and took him away. Our featured artist went on to say, “Just to listen to him talk and see how ‘bad’ he was, I knew someday I was gonna write a song about him.” That song reached number one in America this week in July, 1973 for Jim Croce — Bad, Bad Leroy Brown
