101 # 1 song of the Day – 7-18-13

The 101 number one song of the day owed its creation to a street urchin and a lack of pocket change.

The writer remembers it this way, “I was coming down the Westside Highway in NYC where there is the longest traffic light of all time.  When you stop for the light, a bunch of kids run out and clean your windows and get a couple of cents.  I was headed to the studio waiting for the light to change when a little girl came up to the car and started on my windshield.  I saw her dirty face and her tattered clothes with holes in her socks and a little cap.  When she finished, I couldn’t find any change and ended up giving her the smallest bill I had – a five dollar bill.  When I pulled away, she stood stunned in the middle of the street clutching that five dollar bill.  I couldn’t get the image out of my mind and that is what led to the song which landed at number one on July 18, 1964.  The writer was Bob Gaudio of the Four Seasons and this is the song: “Rag Doll.
