The 101 number one song of the day came from what was, essentially, a family act. But during the recording of this song something happened that would change the family forever.
The group consisted of 3 brothers, their cousin and a high school friend. The band was managed by the brothers’ father who ruled with an iron hand. Problem was, one of the brothers was one with all the ideas and as he grew, he became more and more determined to things his way. While the song you’re about to hear was being recorded, an argument broke out between father and son which ended up in a shoving match. The father stormed out and never again returned to the studio. The tearful son would later apologize, saying he only wanted to make sure the song was “perfect.” It was number one in America on July 17, 1964. The father’s name was Murray, the son’s was Brian – Brian Wilson – of the Beach Boys – “I Get Around”
