In the first six months of 1964 only one American group had a number one song in the U.S.
They were three black women who were discovered by the famed production and writing team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. They came across a song that was written for the Ronettes by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector. Leiber and Stoller wanted to have their new trio record the song but Phil Spector objected to the idea. No matter – they went ahead with their plan anyway and it became a huge hit – sitting atop the American charts on June 4, 1964 for the – Dixie Cups (Chapel of Love)
