101 number one song of the day was the big payoff for a group that struggled for years after they lost their record deal and their name right around the same time.
The quintet was formed in Chicago in 1960 and were signed by Mercury. Their first single, “Pots and Pots” failed to clean up. They were dropped from the label and had to relinquish the name they were using because another group had first claim to it. They added a “C” in front of their old name in a nod to their hometown. And they continued to perform – and struggle. Finally, in the seventies they began to click and on May 21, 1972, their perseverance paid off with the number one song in America. Their old name, by the way, was the “Hi-Lites” but with the addition of the “C” they became the Chi-lites and this is the 101 number one song of the day (Oh Girl)
