The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a “one hit wonder” who became a preacher at the tender age of seven years old.
James McCleese was born in Harlem but his parents moved to a farm in rural North Carolina shortly after his birth. He grew up listening to circuit riding and preachers and his natural showmanship led to his moving into the pulpit at that very young age. It was a natural progression to singing gospel music and he began touring the country with a group called the Nightingales. But rock and roll soon took hold and he was hooked. His one big claim to fame would never earn an award from feminist groups but it arrived at number one this week in 1963 and by this time he had a new last name: Soul- Jimmy Soul “If You Wanna Be Happy.”
