The recording of the 101 # 1 Song of the Day began in a state of sheer panic. It was to be the title cut for the new album from one of the 70s most successful rock bands but when they set out to perform it for the album they couldn’t remember how to play it.
The man responsible for much of the music had recorded the main elements at home months before. But home was in LA and the recording studio was in Miami. So he called his housekeeper who went thru dozens of reels before finally coming up with the right tape. She played it over the phone and the writer, Don Felder captured it on a Song Walkman on the other end. That scratchy tape allowed the other band members to learn the appropriate parts and after the panic subsided the song rose quickly up the charts to arrive at number one on May 7, 1977 for the Eagles.
