The 101 number one song of the day was on the charts once before – in 1960 – when it peaked at number seven but by the time it reached number one for a different performer it had a different title too.
The song was written by three men – each of whom had recording success as individuals. Curtis Mayfield, founding member of the Impressions, scored two singles from the Superfly Soundtrack. Clarence Carter was known for Slip Away and Patches and Jerry Butler – known as the “Iceman” had 34 chart singles including the song “He Will Break Your Heart” which was covered in 1975 by a group that by this time, had a new TV show– and a new title for the song – it’s your 101 number one song of the Day for Tony Orlando and Dawn “He Don’t Love You Like I Love You.”
