The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by the first person to take a Lennon/McCartney song into Billboard Magazine’s Hot 100.  Remember Charles Westover?  Probably not but you’ll remember who he became.

He was appearing at London’s Royal Albert Hall with the Beatles in 1963 and “From Me toYou” was number one in Britain.  Just before John Lennon went on stage, he called out to him that he was going to record the song for an American audience, at first John said “fine” but then had second thoughts and yelled back, “Don’t do that.”  Too late…his mind was made up but other than being a footnote to Beatle history it would have very little impact.  What did have impact were several other songs that Westover had recorded including the song that reached number one in the U.S. this week in April, 1961 for the man who by this time was known at Del Shannon – Runaway
