101 Number One Song of the Day almost never got written at all because the writers thought it was just a copy of something they already did.
The duo of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil were asked by producer Phil Spector to come up with a follow-up song for the pair of artists who had taken another one of their songs to the top. They started writing the song you’re about to hear and then stopped. Too much like the other song, they said. So the project was abandoned. Later, the singers’ contract was sold by Spector to MGM and one of them was set to produce their first project for their new company. He remembered the abandoned song and convinced Mann and Weil to finish it. They did, and they wound up being very pleased with the final product which was number one on April 10, 1966. The song they felt they were copying was also a number one – that was “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’” so that’ll tell you it’s the Righteous Bros. And today’s 101 Number One song of the Day is this – (You’re My) Soul and Inspiration.
