The 101 number one song of the day which became RCA’s fastest selling single of all time, had a distinctive article of clothing in the title but it was about much more than a piece of cloth.
The singer wrote the song while recuperating from an injury suffered in Vietnam. He was a native New Mexican who served in the Air Force for four years. After his discharge, he learned to play the guitar and formed a band which played in bars around the state but he didn’t enjoy much success. So he went back into the military – this time the Army where he joined an elite group which inspired the song that was number one in America on March 11, 1966 – Staff Sargent Barry Sadler (Ballad of the Green Beret)
