The 101 number one song of the day was written and produced by the man Bob Dylan called “America’s greatest living poet” who was also the lead singer of a well known singing group. But it was another group – once known as the Elgins – who took it to the top.
The writer had intended to record it with his own group but he was also working with this other group at the request of his boss at Motown Records. They heard a demo of today’s featured song and pleaded with William Robinson – better known as “Smokey” to let them do it. The Elgins were the result of a merger of two groups: The Primes and the Distants who got together when members of each group defected for various reasons. There would be more personnel changes over the years and many other hits, but the song that arrived at number one on March 6, 1965 marked the first charttopper by a Motown Male group for the now re-named Temptations – (“My Girl”)
