The 101 number one song of the day was done as a favor to a couple of destined to be famous songwriters and wound up as the first of its kind.
It was the first single by a girl group to go to number one. Producer Luther Dixon was working with quartet of high school friends from New Jersey but having some trouble coming up with material. He remembered he owed a favor to a songwriting couple he knew and thought this might be the opportunity to do himself and his group a favor while he was at it. He’d promised to record a song by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and the one he picked was not particularly liked by his group- at first- but it wound up at number one on this week in 1961 for group formerly known as the Poquellos and now known as the Shirelles
