Posted in 101 #1 Song of The Day
The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by an international superstar who was a virtual unknown in the U.S. But when today’s featured song got to the top of the charts here in America, she became the first British female of the rock era to earn a number one song in this county.
In the early 60s she moved to Paris and had a succession of hits sung in French including a song called “Chariot” which was later translated into English and became a number one hit for Peggy March (I Will Follow Him) Her producer thought it was time for her to start recording once again in her native language and wrote some music which she loved immediately and she said if he could write some suitable lyrics for it, she’d record it. He did and she did and it was number one in America on January 22, 1965: for Petula Clark (Downtown)
