The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a short-lived group that got its start at a trendy Hollywood party. The two founding members were drawn together because they stuck out like sore thumbs.
All the guests were expected to wear white. Peter Beckett, a guitarist from Liverpool showed up wearing blue jeans. Only one other partygoer was dressed in the same way – John Charles Crowley, a musician who hailed from Galveston Bay, Texas. The struck up a conversation and soon decided to get together for a jam session. Because the session went so well they decided to form a band which eventually recorded today’s 101 number one song of the day which topped the charts on January 16, 1978. They decided on a name for the band while watching TV – after a show the credits rolled up listing the “Players.” They dropped the “S” and became simply “Player” (Baby Come Back.)
