Listen Live

The 101 number one song of the day was originally recorded by Al Jolson.  It contained a bit of Shakespeare and became the 14th number one song for today’s featured singer and it made that person accessible to a whole new audience.

Because of its more adult orientation compared to the songs the public was used to hearing from this guy, it received airplay on easy listening stations which previously would not touch any of his songs with a ten foot pole.  It debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100 at number 35 and two weeks later, it was number one and it stayed there for six weeks.  It was at number one on this day – December 27, 1960 for Elvis Presley (Are You Lonesome Tonight?)
