NEWTOWN, Conn. — An official with knowledge of a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school says 27 people are dead, including 18 children.

Multiple news agencies, citing unnamed sources, said the shooter was dead and that he was a 20-year-old father of one of the students. The principal and school psychologist were among the dead, CNN said. The killings happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City. The school teaches children from kindergarten through fourth grade — roughly ages 5 to 10. An entire classroom of students was unaccounted for, the Hartford Courant reported, citing unnamed sources.
