101 # 1 Song of the Day 11-6-12

The 101 number one song of the day was the second number one song by the man labeled by no less than Frank Sinatra as the only genius in the music business.

Songwriter Percy Mayfield thought the number would work on two levels: first, some people would think it was funny and, second, others would think it was real.  The singer thought it would work because he particularly liked the “call and response” feature that was prominent in his first big hit.  It reached number one this week in October, 1961 and it’s today’s 101 number one song of the day for Ray Charles – “Hit the Road Jack”
