The 101 number one song of the day marked a new direction for a successful Motown group which led to an even greater success for the 5 man ensemble and it all began because a member of a different group wanted to get out of his contract.
Dennis Edwards sang lead for the Firebirds who were unable to find a following. Frustrated, Edwards got word to label head Berry Gordy, Jr. that he wanted a release. A few days later he was called into the executive offices expecting to work out details of a separation. Instead he was offered a place in a group which had just lost one of their key members who had gone solo. His name was David Ruffin and the group was the Temptations. On the song that reached number one on October 18th, 1969 it was decided to go in a direction that gave all five members a turn at singing lead and this is the song: “I Can’t Get Next To You.”
