1916: Public health nurse Margaret Sanger opened the first U.S. birth-control clinic at 46 Amboy Street in Brooklyn. She was arrested and jailed for 30 days.








1962 The Cuban missile crisis begins as President Kennedy is informed that reconnaissance photos had revealed the presence of missile bases in Cuba.








1954: A nineteen year old singer appeared for the first time on the “Louisiana Hayride,” a live Saturday night country music radio show broadcast on KWKH in Shreveport, Louisiana. He created a huge sensation and on October 16, 1956, his first movie premiered.  The title song “Love Me Tender.”
