The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a young Fargo, ND guitarist named Robert Velline who, more than anyone else, had his life changed the “Day the Music Died.”

When he was 15, he woke up one morning looking forward to his first rock and roll show ever.   That night he would see some of the greatest rock stars in the world: Dion and the Belmonts, the Big Bopper, Richie Valens and his idol Buddy Holly.  By noon of that day he heard the terrible news of the plane crash that took the lives of three of those beloved musicians.  The local radio station put out a call for replacements and Robert volunteered his newly formed group.  They were put on bill and became a hit.  That lead to a recording contract and his life took a turn that Hollywood movies are made of.  And on September 18th 1961 Robert – by this time a star in his own right – had the number one song in America – with a shortened version of his name – Bobby Vee – “Take Good Care of My Baby”  (written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King)
