The 101 number one song of the day was the first number one hit for a group that much of America thought they were listening to the Beatles in disguise when they were first heard in this country. Even the name supported the confusion.

Like the Fab Four, they were born in England. And also like the Lads from Liverpool, internal differences broke them up. But unlike the Beatles, they got back together and went on to their greatest success despite a great deal of infighting which continued throughout much of their career. What kept them together? One explained it this way – “If we hadn’t been related, we would probably never have gotten back together.” They were brothers and their first of nine number one songs reached the top of Billboard’s top 100 on August 7, 1971 – And the name – people thought the initials they used for their name stood for a pseudonym “Beatles Group” – The BeeGees and the song: “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”
