The 101 Number One Song of the Day was recorded by a onetime boxer from Long Island, New York who was out to prove a point.
He racked up 22 wins in 28 amateur bouts but by this time he was making a living pounding the ivories not opponents in the ring. He was starting to rack up an impressive list of hits but he was bothered by critics who insisted on describing him as a “pop crooner.” To use his words, he decided to “throw a rock at the image people had of (him).” The result was his first number one song which ruled the charts on August 1, 1980 for Billy Joel.
