The 101 number one song of the day was recorded by a group whose name was inspired by a poem by William Blake. Although its success as a single was huge, the group actually tried to avoid making singles.

Two of the four members met on the beach in Venice, CA. One of them was in a meditation class with the other two who would comprise the quartet. Their music philosophy was summed up by one of the members who said, “We always made an album as an album; we never really tried to make singles.” Only afterwards would they consider what might be commercial as a single. The song that was on top of the Hot 100 on July 31st, 1967 was considered too long so it was severely edited. As far as the William Blake poem…it read in part: There are things that are known and things that are unknown…in between – the Doors.
