The 101 number one song of the day was the biggest song of the year and one of the most successful singles of all time and it all started with a case of insomnia.

Today’s featured singer was knocking on doors in NYC looking for a record contract and helping his friend, Jackie Wilson, at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theatre. While there he ran into members of an all white group called the Fireflies who were a bit nervous appearing for the first time before a mostly black audience. His encouragement quelled their concern and they went onto to a successful performance. Several weeks later he knocked at the door of Beltone records and was surprised to run into Richie Adams who was the Fireflies lead singer. Adams introduced him to label owner Joe Rene. Adams then gave him a song he’d written to audition. It was a perfect fit. That song reached number one on July 10, 1961 and stayed on top of the charts for seven weeks. As for the insomnia – it wasBobby Lewis with “Tossin’ & Turnin’.”
