1972: An old bridge in Mississippi collapsed and fell into the river below. It was signficant because of its inclusion in a hugely popular song of five years earlier. It was the Tallahatchie Bridge, made famous in Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 blockbuster “Ode to Billy Joe.”
