It was a shocking verdict in one of America’s most infamous trials. Plus, a bridge made famous in song, slides into the muddy waters below.

Was Lizzy Borden an ax-wielding psycho who slaughtered her parents? A Massachusetts jury didn’t think so, and acquitted her of murder charges 119 years ago today.

 

 

 

 

 

 

1963 A hotline is set up between the United States and Soviet Union.

 

 

 

 

 

 

1972: An old bridge in Mississippi collapsed and fell into the river below. It was signficant because of its inclusion in a hugely popular song of five years earlier. It was the Tallahatchie Bridge, made famous in Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 blockbuster “Ode to Billy Joe.”
