1873: Susan B. Anthony was fined $100 for trying to vote in the 1872 U.S. presidential election. She refused to pay the fine, but never was allowed to vote.






1928: Amelia Earhart becomes the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean as she completed a flight from Newfoundland to Wales in about 21 hours.






1983 Sally K. Ride becomes America’s first woman in space as she and four colleagues blast off aboard the space shuttle Challenger.
