A Mancunian Hat Trick, the song was recorded by a band whose lead singer was a former child star in his native England. When he turned to music he was much more popular in America, though. In fact, this song was never even released as a single in England! Now, back to the Mancunian Hat Trick…this was the third song in a row from a Manchester, England group to reach number one in America despite the popularity of the Liverpool sound. “I’m Telling You Now” from Freddie and the Dreamers and “Game of Love” by Wayne Fontana and The Mindbenders were the first two by folks from Manchester, or Mancunians as they’re known. It was number one on this day in 1965.
