Glyn Ellis was born in Manchester and by 1965 even people from Manchester were considered to have that “Liverpool sound”. Glyn was more inspired by a Memphis sound and he wanted to change his name so he looked to Elvis – more specifically, one of his back up musicians named D.J. Fontana. Now Glyn had a new name: Wayne Fontana; he just needed a name for his band and that came from the local cinema where “Mindbenders” was showing. He owned the top spot on the chart on this day in 1965.
