This song was recorded as the group was about to disband. They were going to give it “one more try” and then go their separate ways. It turned their career around though and left America with a symbol that is as popular today as it was then. The song was inspired by the true story of a man returning home from prison. Tony actually thought it was pretty corny but he couldn’t get it out of his head. Instead of disbanding, they ended up with a network TV show…and a number one song on this day in 1973
