This song almost didn’t get written! The guys thought it was just a copy of something they already did. The writers were asked by Phil Spector to come up with a follow-up song for the pair of artists that took another one of their songs to the top. The writers (Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil) began writing the tune but stopped because it was too much like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” which the Righteous Brothers had taken to number one before. Later, when Mann and Weil’s contract was sold by Spector to MGM, they revisited the song, finished it and it’s today’s 101 #1 Song of the Day from 1966.
