on this day in 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders his Army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox in Virginia.

1959 NASA announces the selection of America’s first seven astronauts: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Donald Slayton.

And in music History: 1988 An automobile accident took the life of Dave Prater. He was one half of the great soul duo Sam and Dave.
