The song had a rough road to the top. Nobody wanted to record it except for its writer – and he had no idea what it meant! The producer didn’t like the song either but the group of four was heavily influenced by John, their de-facto leader who insisted they record the song before they put their new album to bed. John said to his dying day he had no idea what the song was about but he liked it anyway and even thought the rest of the group didn’t like it the public did and radio stations started playing it off the album as it was never introduced as a single. By the time it finally was released it was so popular it sold 150,000 copies the first day and it was number one on this day in 1966. Win a free massage from MTTI with the replay!
